For better asset management, please consider any of the following:

Offer a Report that would identify any duplicate assets in the database, based either the Name or Serial Number values.
Offer a Setting that would not allow duplicate assets to be created or saved, based on the Name or Serial Number values. This feature would likely need to involve the Import function as well, where there is a pre-import check (aka Validate option) that scans for possible duplicates.

Definitely need this feature - we've put a constraint on the database so cannot have a duplicate name or serial number. But that is a bit of a hack.
